Making the Move to Singapore

I entered oil & gas recruitment in 2012 when the booming exploration market was driven by the soaring price of oil. That all changed in 2015 when the price dropped to $45 a barrel, the consequential effect on the global E&P market was swift and dramatic with a knock on effect across UK recruitment resulting in headcount reduction and freezes. The result of this downturn not only opened my mind to the need to focus on a new market but also whether it was time to experience living in a new country.

Before making any move I need to ask myself the following questions;Singapore Skyline Night

  1. What did I want to happen in my career?
  2. Which location would be best for current and future growth of business / personal development?
  3. Where could I position myself globally?
  4. Which market / sector interested me the most?
  5. Which recruitment company would support me in this relocation?

I was lucky enough to work with an exceptional recruitment to recruitment company who gave me plenty of background advice and market information. When they introduced me to the management team at EarthStream the decision become very clear. Brett Marsh (SE Asia MD) was looking to relocate UK recruiters into his Singapore and Malaysian business to drive the renewables and technology practice forward.

Everyone I spoke with at EarthStream had been on the journey from consultant through to the highest level of management and shared the same passion and values that run throughout the business, the consultants and managers I met in Singapore & London were highly motivated, knowledgeable and had a clear direction for the business.

Singapore Grand Prix Night
Initially the move to Singapore seemed a daunting task but the team at EarthStream made this step in my life very simple and straightforward. Three months later, I have just completed my first quarter in Singapore and my experience has been extremely positive. From the welcoming expat community, the lively office environment and securing my first placement it has been everything that I had hoped for and more. the icing on the cake has to be experiencing my first night Formula 1 race!

If you think an international move could work for you why not ask the same questions that I did and if you are in our industry get in contact with Brett or myself. Our growth in the technology and engineering sectors means we are constantly looking for outstanding recruiters who want to further develop as market experts.
